Pay for diesel mechanics in every state, what it comes to after tax, and how far it goes after local prices and rent.
Diesel mechanics earn a median of $61,770 a year, or $29.70 an hour, 21.2% more than the $50,980 median for all jobs. Pay is highest in Hawaii ($80,080) and lowest in West Virginia ($46,610). The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts them as “Bus and Truck Mechanics and Diesel Engine Specialists” (occupation code 49-3031).

The bottom tenth earn under $44,530, the figure the Bureau itself uses as a rough guide to starting pay, and the top tenth more than $88,740. The average is $64,320; it sits above the median because the top earners pull it up.
