Pay for computer systems analysts in every state, what it comes to after tax, and how far it goes after local prices and rent.
Computer systems analysts earn a median of $105,850 a year, or $50.89 an hour, 107.6% more than the $50,980 median for all jobs. Pay is highest in Rhode Island ($134,630) and lowest in Idaho ($75,310). Occupation code 15-1211 in the Bureau of Labor Statistics survey.
Half of the 519,530 computer systems analysts in the survey earn between $82,860 and $134,110. The bottom tenth earn under $67,340, the figure the Bureau itself uses as a rough guide to starting pay, and the top tenth more than $167,710. The average is $114,610; it sits above the median because the top earners pull it up.
| Nationally | Per year | Per hour |
|---|---|---|
| Bottom 10% earn less than | $67,340 | $32.38 |
| Bottom quarter earn less than | $82,860 | $39.84 |
| Median | $105,850 | $50.89 |
| Top quarter earn more than | $134,110 | $64.48 |
| Top 10% earn more than | $167,710 | $80.63 |
Hourly figures divide the yearly ones by 2,080 hours, the survey's own full-time year. Convert any salary.
The highest state medians are in Rhode Island ($134,630), Washington ($129,410), Massachusetts ($128,240), Colorado ($127,750) and California ($127,720). The lowest are in Idaho ($75,310), Arkansas ($81,760), Mississippi ($86,280), Alaska ($88,520) and Hawaii ($88,640). The survey does not publish a figure for 1 state, usually because too few people do the job there.
Higher pay often comes with higher prices. Adjusted for each state's price level, pay goes furthest in Rhode Island ($131,629 at national prices), Colorado ($123,967), Massachusetts ($121,259), Washington ($120,929) and Virginia ($119,520).
The most computer systems analysts work in California (59,060), Texas (47,990) and Florida (35,270). Relative to all jobs, the work is most common in Washington (6.8 per 1,000 jobs), Massachusetts (6.1) and Virginia (5.6).
On the national median of $105,850, a single filer in a state with no income tax takes home about $83,295 a year after federal tax, Social Security and Medicare, or $3,204 every two weeks. On each state's own median and taxes, take-home ranges from $57,819 in Idaho to $99,718 in Washington. Work out your own paycheck.
The typical rent in each state's median county takes a median 18.2% of a computer systems analyst's gross pay, and stays under the usual 30% guideline in 49 of the 49 states and DC. With 10% down at a 7.03% mortgage rate, a single computer systems analyst earning the state median could afford the typical home in its median county in 26 of the 49 states and DC, under the 28% guideline. On the national median alone, that guideline stretches to about $311,043. Try it with your own numbers, or see where this pay covers the typical rent.

Click a column to sort it. “After local prices” divides the median by the state's price level (national average = 100). Take-home is for a single filer on the state median with no retirement or health deductions. Rent share is a year of the typical rent in the state's median county against the median pay. A dash means the survey publishes no figure.
