How much do web developers make?

Pay for web developers in every state, what it comes to after tax, and how far it goes after local prices and rent.

The short answer

Web developers earn a median of $92,650 a year, or $44.54 an hour, 81.7% more than the $50,980 median for all jobs. Pay is highest in Washington ($130,440) and lowest in Arkansas ($50,550). Occupation code 15-1254 in the Bureau of Labor Statistics survey.

The pay range

What web developers earn, low to high.

Half of the 70,190 web developers in the survey earn between $64,230 and $126,230. The bottom tenth earn under $48,100, the figure the Bureau itself uses as a rough guide to starting pay, and the top tenth more than $162,290. The average is $98,770; it sits above the median because the top earners pull it up.

By state

Where web developers are paid most.

The highest state medians are in Washington ($130,440), Virginia ($128,380), California ($119,570), District of Columbia ($114,690) and Maryland ($112,690). The lowest are in Arkansas ($50,550), South Dakota ($51,100), Montana ($62,060), Iowa ($64,210) and Oregon ($64,460). The survey does not publish a figure for 7 states, usually because too few people do the job there.

Higher pay often comes with higher prices. Adjusted for each state's price level, pay goes furthest in Virginia ($126,978 at national prices), Washington ($121,892), Missouri ($114,241), California ($107,993) and Maryland ($107,366).

The most web developers work in California (7,320), Texas (4,910) and Virginia (4,590). Relative to all jobs, the work is most common in Washington (1.2 per 1,000 jobs), Virginia (1.1) and Montana (1.1).

After tax

What the paycheck looks like.

On the national median of $92,650, a single filer in a state with no income tax takes home about $74,009 a year after federal tax, Social Security and Medicare, or $2,847 every two weeks. On each state's own median and taxes, take-home ranges from $41,294 in Arkansas to $100,422 in Washington. Work out your own paycheck.

Rent and a home

What one web developer's pay covers.

The typical rent in each state's median county takes a median 21.6% of a web developer's gross pay, and stays under the usual 30% guideline in 40 of the 43 states and DC. With 10% down at a 7.03% mortgage rate, a single web developer earning the state median could afford the typical home in its median county in 18 of the 43 states and DC, under the 28% guideline. On the national median alone, that guideline stretches to about $269,894. Try it with your own numbers, or see where this pay covers the typical rent.

Click a column to sort it. “After local prices” divides the median by the state's price level (national average = 100). Take-home is for a single filer on the state median with no retirement or health deductions. Rent share is a year of the typical rent in the state's median county against the median pay. A dash means the survey publishes no figure.
